Carry-on Baggage Policies

Alitalia allows one carry-on bag and one personal item for each passenger. The weight limitation for carry-on baggage is 8 Kilograms (18 pounds). The baggage should not exceed the following dimension:

Alitalia provides ‘Under the seat’ label for small luggage which is no longer than (36×45×20) cm in (height×width×length)

Carry-on personal item: Handbag, work backpack, laptop computer, camera, camera bag, small luggage, etc. counts as a personal item. Alitalia allows one personal item onboard. The weight and dimension of your personal item should not exceed 8 kg and (55×35×25) cm.

Passengers have to make sure that their carry-on baggage fits into the size and weight instructions by checking it with the carry-on baggage sizer nearby the check-in counter. If anyone fails to perform the check, their permission to board the plane can be denied.  

Prohibited Carry-on Items

• Liquids: Alitalia follows The European Union and the ENAC adopted transportable amount liquid instructions. You can carry a small amount of liquid in a container no larger than 3.4 ounces or 100ml in your handbag. All the containers have to be inside transparent leakage-proof sealed plastic bags otherwise it won’t be allowed. And the bag can not exceed 

1 litre or approximately 18 x 20 cm in size. Only one such plastic bag is allowed in the aircraft.

Sharp objects: Objects with sharp edges are not allowed in your carry-on bags. Such as;

• Ice axes and ice picks
• Razor blades
• Box cutters
• knives 
• Scissors
• Martial arts equipment e
• Swords and sabers

Sports equipment: Blunt sports equipment that can cause serious harm can’t be transported as carry-on baggage.

• Golf club 
• Pole 
• Cricket or baseball bat

Flammable substances: All kinds of explosives and flammable substances are a threat to the safety of the aircraft. Under any circumstance, these following items are not allowed in the aircraft.

• Blasting caps
• Detonators and fuses
• Replica or imitation explosive devices
• Mines, grenades, and other explosive military stores
• Fireworks and other pyrotechnics
• Smoke-generating canisters, and smoke-generating cartridges
• Dynamite, gunpowder, and plastic explosives.

Checked Baggage Policies

The checked-in baggage has to be within the size of 158 cm (62 inches) in overall dimension. And the baggage can not weigh over 23 kg (50 pounds) for every travel class except for business class. The weight limitation for the business class is  32 kg. The number of allowed free checked baggage in Alitalia depends on which class you are flying.

Following flights allow a maximum of 2 bags weighing 23 kg each:

• To/from Japan 
• From the Middle East and India (excluding Israel) to the USA, Mexico, and Canada
• From Brazil

Extra Baggage fees (Excluding Canada)

Carrying extra baggage can cost you a lot of money. In economy class passengers are allowed to carry only one baggage. You have to pay extra fees for carrying secondary baggage in economy class.

You have to pay 250 USD (200 in euro & 320 in Canadian dollars) for carrying 3rd or more baggage travelling to any destinations except Canada, USA & Mexico. 285 USD (240 in euro & 330 in Canadian dollars) fees will be applicable for carrying 3rd up to 6th baggage to/from USA & Mexico.

A maximum number of 6 bags are allowed for every destination in any class.

Overweight fees (Excluding Canada)

Baggage weighing over 23 kg (32 kg for business class) will be counted as overweight baggage and the following fees will be applicable based on the destination.

The maximum allowed weight for checked-in baggage is 32 kg.  

Oversize fees (Excluding Canada)

Checked-in baggage size has to be within 158 cm (height×width×length) in overall dimension otherwise ascertained fees will be applicable. Baggage exceeding 203 cm in overall dimension will not be accepted. Depending on the destination, the below fees will be applicable for oversize baggage.

• 75 USD ( 60 in euro & 95 in Canadian dollars) for internal flights
• 100 USD ( 80 in euro & 130 in Canadian dollars) for destinations within Europe and North Africa.
• 100 USD ( 80 in euro & 130 in Canadian dollars) for flights to/from Egypt.
• 300 USD (250 in euro & 360 in Canadian dollars) for every destination within the USA and Mexico
• 370 USD ( 300 in euro & 480 in Canadian dollars) for other destinations except Canada.
