Air India Baggage Allowance, Size, Weight & Fees 2023

If you have to travel anywhere in the world via India, the flagship carrier Air India could be a great choice.  It is absolutely safe and follows a tight schedule so that you will be able to arrive at your holiday destination on time.

Air India has a fixed baggage policy that you must follow if you want your bags to be transported by the airline. Economy ticket holders are allowed to take single baggage with dimensions of 115 cm. The maximum weight of the bag cannot exceed 8 kg. For bags exceeding this allocation limit, you will be charged an extra payment.

Air India Carry-on Baggage Allowance

Air India has a specific carry-on baggage allowance based on the type of seating class ticket that you are going to buy.  This allocation depends on whether you bought an Economy class ticket or a Business Class ticket.

In addition to the policy mentioned above, there are certain exceptions if you are taking Alliance air-operated flights. These policies are:

  • The maximum weight allowed onboard is 5 kg.
  • The maximum dimension allowed is 40cm x 15cm x 30cm.
  • Children are entitled to the same baggage rules as adults.

In addition to the rules above you are also entitled to carry small hand baggage or a laptop bag which could include all your daily necessities and documents or laptop that you might need on your journey. If you have any need for crutches or wheelchairs, you could bring that instead of a personal bag.

Air India Checked-in Baggage allowance

Air India has different weight allocations depending on what type of ticket you have bought and whether your flight is international or domestic.

Air India does not have any certain restrictions on the number of bags but more on the weight and size allocations. These regulations for domestic flights are noted below:

Additionally, if you have a child with you, the same arrangements will be maintained for the child, while infants without their own seats are only applicable to receive 10 kg weight worth of baggage allowance along with one stroller, buggy or child car seat.

Air India Excess Baggage Fee

For domestic flights, any excess baggage is worth SAR 27 or INR 600 in addition to the GST per kg. The excess charge for international flights depends on the route that you will be taking is reported in the table below. All currencies are in USD:

The band 1 countries involved in this route are Bangladesh, Myanmar, Afghanistan, and Nepal. Band 2 involves East Asia and South Africa. Band 3 involves New Zealand, Australia, and Fuji. Hong Kong and Japan are considered Band 4. Flights within other countries not involving India are within Band 5.  

Air India Special Baggage

As long as the sporting kit you are using is only 6 kg, you are allowed to transport your special baggage completely free of charge. For weights exceeding 6 kg, you will be charged extra money until 15 kg. After this, the airline authorities will not allow you to take your equipment.

In addition, if you need to carry any small firearms you will have the right licensing to carry them and declare them when you are going to check them in. You are only allowed to take 50 cartridges with you and must make a handling charge of INR 5000 per firearm.

Air India Restricted Items

Do note that you are not allowed to take any sort of liquid other than water when you are flying with Air India. In addition, there are some other banned items and contrabands that have been restricted in accordance with the airport rules. These items are applicable to your checked-in baggage and carry-on bags.

  • Sharp or pointy items that could cause punctures.
  • Chemicals or Poisonous fluids including pesticides, as well as shampoos, detergents, and other similar substances.
  • Matchboxes and lighters or any sort of fire-hazardous objects of any type cannot be in any of your bags.
  • Stunning devices like tasers and batons can stun and harm the human body.
  • Any sort of drugs or medicine, unless you have a doctor’s prescription to prove your need for them.
  • Large electrical devices like hoverboards, e-bikes, solo wheels, balance wheels, etc.
  • No fruits can be carried either in your bag or on your person. It is prohibited even in liquid form.  
  • Delicate items like jewellery and glassware could break easily on the least contact.
  • Radioactive or oxidizing materials.
  • Medicines and drugs unless you have the right prescription to prove that you need them.
  • Firearms and weaponry unless you have the appropriate license for them and follow the packaging rules imposed on them.


What is the excess Baggage fee?

The excess baggage fee for domestic flights is fixed at INR 600. However, this differs between routes in the international platform. Of course, if you have certain coupons offered by the airline you could be exempt from these weight regulations.

Is there a discount if you decide to pay for your excess baggage in advance?

If you decide to pre-book for your excess baggage in advance, you are eligible to receive a 50 per cent discount from the airline authorities.

What is the cabin baggage allowance for first-class riders?

 First-class and business-class riders have the same cabin baggage allowance. They are allowed to take in a single standard bag weighing a total of 12 kg along with a single personal laptop bag.
